What size tablecloth do I need? Well, just as there are no standard size tables, there aren't hard and fast rules for tablecloth sizing. It depends on the table, the room, the style and the purpose. It's all about decoration. A well-dressed table creates a style, sets the atmosphere, and always looks good.
You are very welcome to send us your table dimensions, and what you're looking for. We're happy to make suggestions, or arrange a custom-fitted cloth.
Classically a drop of 25-30cm creates a well-proportioned cloth, allowing people to sit at the table without the cloth getting in the way. In general, a little too long is better than a little too short, and drops tend to lengthen for more formal tables. A drop of 40 or 50cm is not too long.
For special occasions you may want a cloth with a floor-length drop of 70-75cm on serving or buffet tables.
On outdoor tables, especially if the chairs have arms, a shorter drop of 10-15 cm may be practical.
On a round table, either a round or a square tablecloth can look good. You will get four points and four arches, so this works best for tables that seat two or four. However, you need to be more careful with the drop, as the points can touch the floor - 25cm is ideal.
On oval tables, a rectangular tablecloth will fit in the in the same way.
For tables of unusual timber or construction, table runners or place mats can be used for decoration. Table runners placed across the table make for stylish vis-à-vis double place mats.
To size the cloth, first measure the table dimensions, then add double the length of the drop, to allow for a drop on both sides. So for a drop of 25cm, your cloth will be 50cm larger than the table dimensions.
One last tip... if you do find the perfect cloth, but it's not the right size, it's never too late to get a new table!
